Water is coming through the ceiling and it's raining — first, take a breath. You can limit the damage in the next few minutes with a few simple steps, then get a pro out fast. Here's exactly what to do.
6 steps to take immediately
- 1. Contain the water. Put a bucket, bin or towels under the drip to protect your floors, and lay down plastic if you have it.
- 2. Move valuables and electronics out of the area, and unplug anything nearby that's getting wet.
- 3. Relieve a bulging ceiling — carefully. If a spot on the ceiling is sagging and full of water, place a bucket under it and gently poke a small hole with a screwdriver to let it drain in a controlled way. This prevents a bigger collapse.
- 4. Take photos and videos. Document the leak and any damage — useful for your roofer and for insurance.
- 5. Do NOT climb on the roof in the rain or storm. It's dangerous and won't help — leave the roof to a pro with the right gear.
- 6. Call a roofer for emergency service. Fast tarping or temporary sealing stops the water and buys time for a proper repair.
Temporary fix vs. permanent repair
In a storm, the goal is to stop the water now — usually with tarping or temporary sealing. Once the weather clears, a roofer finds the real source of the leak (often failed flashing, not where the stain is) and does a permanent repair. Both matter: the tarp protects your home tonight; the repair fixes it for good.
